Balfour Beatty announced yesterday that is has won contracts in North and South Carolina, Georgia, Texas and Virginia, worth in the region of $449 million (£274 million).

Ian Tyler, chief executive at the company, said: "We are delighted to have secured these contracts. The US is an increasingly important part of the group and this latest work demonstrates the depth and diversity of our US businesses."

Balfour Beatty's practices in the United States include Balfour Beatty Communities, Balfour Beatty Construction US, Balfour Beatty Rail, Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, and Heery International.

The company claims to have supplied "value-added engineering" alongside shareholder value in more recent years.

It has four sectors of business and is prepared to bring together specialist teams to deliver projects, according to their set budget and time targets.
