Conservative officials are proposing that construction companies would be responsible for their own health and safety audits, without outside intervention being enforced upon them.

But it is believed by the UK's largest union Unite that this sort of measure could make health and safety issues arise.

The organisation warns that such a move could mean higher site death rates and raises concern.

Bob Blackman, Unite national officer for construction, commented: "Ensuring high standards of health and safety on construction sites comes with a cost. The Tories should be focusing on preventing accidents and deaths rather than looking at ways of saving money for the employers."

He added that far from being perfect, the HSE currently possesses enforcement powers and is a trusted authority by construction workers.

Mr Blackman was adamant that the Tory cutting of red tape announcement by shadow business secretary Ken Clarke would mean lower costs for employers at the cost of lives.

The HSE aims to stop injury, ill health or death befalling workers as a result of their job.
