Reaching 18-stories high, the tower will be erected in the city's commercial quarter and is hoped to be a strong candidate for the re-housing of 5,000 Ministry of Justice (MoJ) jobs set to move from London.

The company responsible for the project, 30 Pall Mall Ltd, has included proposals for ground floor retail units, a courtyard and 165 parking spaces in the building's basement.

Ashley Moore, the company's managing director, said: "I am delighted the planning committee has granted planning consent for 30 Pall Mall.

"It will act as a springboard for Liverpool as the UK recovers from the recession by delivering high quality office space."

He added that the building would become an indicator of the city's expansion of its "office economy".

The Ministry of Justice is used in 900 UK locations, including prisons and courts.
