Carillion said the deal netted the company cash proceeds in excess of £26 million when it sold its non-core environmental consultancy business to Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM).

This part of the business is concerned with UK health and safety and environmental consultancy and said to be a leader in terms of renewables, sustainability and climate change capabilities.

Paul Dougas, SKM chief executive officer and managing director, commented: "The fact is that Europe leads the world in sustainability, climate change and environment and Enviros is a leading firm in this space.

Mr Dougas said that this widens the company's "strategic consulting capability", already globally exported through a virtual teaming approach its centres of excellence.

He added that SKM's expansion is propelled forward according to its clients' demands and that assisting them in attaining their goals is all part and parcel of the what the company does.
