It was in celebration of the unveiling of the new scientific plant development unit, which can be used by around 120 scientists.
The Kier built Cambridge Botanic Gardens was made possible by receiving funding from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, gaining a sum of £82 million.
Lord Sainsbury, the organisation's founder, said: "This is one of the most exciting projects with which my charitable foundation has been involved. It combines an inspirational research programme, an historic site, and a beautiful laboratory. It will become a centre of excellence in plant science."
David Sainsbury said in 2005 that he wanted to give £1 billion away while he was still alive. Having spent £400 million in a 40-year period, this means that the speed at which grants are permitted is likely to increase in the coming years.
