On a former Royal Navy Air Site the 600-berth Portland Marina has been completed, which has been approved as an Olympic team training centre.
The new site is also set to be a key location when it comes to the London 2012 sailing events.
When the time comes 250 berths, alongside the venue's on-shore facilities, will be used for the occasion.
Atkins has been responsible for both the engineering and design of the centre, which has been three years in the making. It has been involved in all aspects, including engineering appraisal and environmental issues.
The marina has a 860 m breakwater that has been purposefully built, as it has no natural inlet to provide shelter for its berths.
Richard Hill, associate director of Atkins' ports and maritime team, said: "Marinas in themselves aren't complicated developments but what makes this project stand out is the standards we delivered to in terms of both sustainability and design."
Portland Marina was delivered as part of a South West Regional Development Agency wider initiative. The organisation serves to work towards making the south-west "a better place to live".
