Paul Morrell has been named as the country's chief construction adviser and he will act as a link between the industry and the UK's leaders.

The appointment was announced by economic secretary to the treasury Ian Pearson and construction minister Ian Lucas.

Mr Morrell will be responsible for making sure the building industry is equipped with the skills and knowledge to take advantage of any available opportunities for growth.

He expressed pleasure at his new role and determination to help protect construction jobs in the UK.

"The potential for a well-designed and well-made built environment to lead economic, social and environmental betterment remains enormous - and the challenges are matched by opportunities both here and abroad," Mr Morrell commented.

Earlier this month, the government revealed plans to invest in critical skills in order to aid economic recovery in the UK.
