The funding will be used to develop trainees and apprenticeships for the industry.
Secretary of state for business, Lord Mandelson, said: "The engineering construction sector employs up to 60,000 people in the UK. This new investment means that more home-grown workers will be provided with the skills and experience needed."
He added that the investment would enable jobs to be taken up that are being created as a consequence of the necessary investment in future power supply for the UK.
Funding was committed in response to the Gibson Review of Engineering and Construction.
The government also outlined that it will be working with the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board in order for the training to be applied fairly to industry companies in reaction to the review.
