Crossrail, Europe's largest infrastructure project, will deliver an economic boost of at least £20 billion to London's economy, Mr Johnson said.

By the end of 2010, construction at all of the new central section stations is scheduled to be underway following a year of significant progress during 2009.

Meanwhile, all of Crossrail's key tunnelling contracts should have also been assigned in preparation for work beginning in 2011.

"Every inch of London will benefit from the jobs, new transport links, increase in capacity and easing of congestion that Crossrail and the Tube upgrades will bring," Mr Johnson stated.

Earlier this month, Crossrail awarded the £500 million contract for redevelopment work on Tottenham Court Road station to BAM Nuttall and Taylor Woodrow Construction.
