A total of £2.235 billion has now been made available for building new homes over the past six months through the national affordable housing programme, revealed housing minister John Healey.
He added that a further £278 million had recently been released to build 5,000 affordable homes and to create and protect new jobs in construction, including 2,800 apprenticeships for young builders.
He stated: "Across the country workers are already back on mothballed sites, youngsters are getting a head start in their careers, councils are starting to build homes again and developers are getting much needed support during the recession."
The latest data from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors shows that the volume of public housing construction work stabilised during the third quarter of last year, with just one per cent more surveyors reporting a fall rather than a rise in workloads in this sector.
